Americans are big drinkers…of water, that is. We keep bottles of water in our cars, at the office, in our gym bag and in our briefcase or purse. Travelers bring water onto planes and trains. I don't remember what we did before bottled water became so popular, but I bet we didn't drink as much.

Most Americans get plenty of fluids, according to a report by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the scientific body that establishes nutrition recommendations for Americans. In fact, aiming toward a goal of eight daily glasses of water in addition to other fluids in your diet probably is not necessary.

The IOM recommends a total of about nine daily cups of fluid for women and about 13 cups for men. Keep in mind, however, that everything that we drink counts-water, milk, coffee and tea, juice and soft drinks-as do water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables. Of course, water is calorie-free, which makes it an attractive option.

"Use thirst as your guide," advises Jo Ann Hattner, R. D., a nutrition consultant in San Francisco, Calif. "Drink when you're thirsty and you probably will get enough fluids over the course of the day." Hattner points out that older adults are the exception. "Older adults often don't have a good thirst mechanism so they won't feel thirsty even though their body needs fluids." Be sure to drink a lot if you are physically active, live in a hot climate, or are taking a vacation to a warm and/or dry climate.

Include foods that are high in liquid to help keep your body hydrated. Start the day off with Whole Grain Total topped with milk and fresh fruit. Enjoy soup or a large salad with your lunch. Include vegetables at dinner, along with fruit for dessert. Hattner suggests being aware of the color of your urine to determine whether you've had enough fluids. "If it's light in color, you're fine. If the color is dark, then your urine may be too concentrated and you need to drink up!"

The Audi brand has taken home quite a huge share of the awards that were given during the 2006 Auto Interior Show. Every website owner/operator is familiar with affiliate programs, we all belong to one or more, or have at one time, and display banners and buttons on our websites offering anything from a credit card to viagra, Which is completely fine for attracting perspective buyers to products that your affiliate sponsors offer. There's no crime in earning a little revenue to support your website and your hard work designing, developing and supporting it.

But if you're like me at all, you have a few domain names sitting around doing nothing too. It occurred to me that having the domain names listed for sale has generated little or no revenue, but every year I renew them because I think that they are good domain names and have marketing potential if put into the right hands.

So I decided to do a little research and find out what affiliate programs were out there that offered more than buttons and banners, and I found that there are a number of affiliate companies that offer RSS feeds and Data Feeds and even some offer complete "Turn-key" websites already built for you, download an asp or php version of the Turn-Key site to put on your own server and you're good to go. So I looked at what domain names I owned and wasn't using, thought about what types of affiliate programs they would lend themselves to, which in my case was easy, and I did some research. I had 3 domain names reserved and no websites for them, SongOasis. com, Gear-Junkie. net and ArtistMatch. com. They were at one time active websites but hadn't been in service for quite some time, so considering they were domains pertaining mostly to music or media, I started my search there. I discovered that there were more than a few music based affiliate programs available which required an investment in time doing a little digging through.

I narrowed my search to those affiliate programs offering "Data Feeds". These are feeds that come in the form of XML or RSS feeds, as well as Text or CSV files that the affiliate would make available to you to download and use how you see fit, with some restrictions of course. Researching those affiliate programs I found that these feeds would provide all of the information, or at least much of it to the same extent as the affiliate website themselves. Which to me meant that I could build a dynamic website offering some great things in a way the I controlled without having to maintain an inventory or process payments or handle returns and deal with any billing issues should they arrise.

So... I decided for my Gear-Junkie. net domain to go with musical instrument sales through Zzounds. com, and offer over 4000 musical instruments online. Being a musician myself, this sounded appealing to me. For SongOasis. com I went with a great program from Rhapsody which offers real time feeds in xml format so my site is updated everyday with the latest artist and music releases everyday with no additional work on my part after building the site. And Finally for ArtistMatch. com I went with an affiliate program by CDUniverse. com. This program provided Data Feeds for over 40,000 items where you can shop online for music CDs, movies and games.

I've also cross referenced each of the sites with my own banners promoting the other sites from within my sites so that visibility to all of the affiliate programs is blended throughout the 3 websites which is helpful in generating sales if not traffic. So if you are sitting on a few domain names and would like to put them to work for you, try researching some of the affiliate programs out there that offer these type of data feeds and see if you can use them to your advantage as well.

Ohio schools award 4 million to school districts for teacher training in mathematics and science

In June 2006, the Ohio schools awarded more than $4 million in competitive grants to school districts across the state. The grants are funded by the U. S. Department of Education’s Mathematics and Science Partnership (MSP) program, and authorized by the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

The MSP grants, which are funded throughout the 2006-2007 school year, will give 1,800 teachers in high-need Ohio schools the opportunity to increase their knowledge of mathematics and science. If MSP funding remains at current levels, the Ohio schools grants will be renewable through June 2009, ensuring professional development for as many teachers as possible.

The program partners colleges and universities with high-need school districts to provide the needed training. Their faculty members also will work with teachers to study techniques for implementing the recent Ohio schools Mathematics and Science Academic Content Standard within their students’ coursework. Most Ohio schools teachers were trained and certified to teach curriculum that focused primarily on arithmetic. Today’s student begins learning algebra, geometry, measurement and the basic concepts of data analysis in the very early grades levels.

The need, according to Susan Rave Zelman, superintendent of public instruction for the Ohio schools, is simple — strong mathematics and science skills are necessary for today’s students to compete effectively in tomorrow’s workforce. Teachers’ own skills and knowledge must be expanded upon in order to provide the students with an effective curriculum in these crucial subjects.

The Ohio schools received 24 proposals for the grants. The ten grants will address either mathematics development, science development, or a combination of both. The grants encompass partnerships between 15 college/universities and more than 100 high-need school districts within the Ohio schools.

Other Mathematics and Science Partnerships within the Ohio schools include The Mathematics Coaches Project, K-3 Mathematics: The Early Foundation, Middle Grade Mathematics: The Critical Bridge, and the Topics Foundational to Calculus.

The Mathematics Coaches Project. In partnership with Ohio University, mathematics faculty members train kindergarten through sixth-grade teachers to become coaches. They then coach other elementary teachers in high-need Ohio schools, where student mathematics performance is low and the school is at-risk.

K-3 Mathematics: The Early Foundation. This program helps Ohio schools kindergarten through third-grade teachers obtain a deeper understanding of early-grade mathematics skills. Additionally, they are taught to use inquiry and concrete experiences of the children within their teaching.

Middle Grade Mathematics: The Critical Bridge. The Middle Grade Math program prepares Ohio schools fourth through eighth-grade teachers to help their students grasp the increasingly complex principles of mathematics. The program includes expanding the teachers’ knowledge and instructional approach.

Topics Foundational to Calculus. For Ohio schools eighth through twelfth-grade mathematics teachers, this program highlights the essential foundations of algebra, geometry and trigonometry for preparing students for calculus coursework.

Unlike previous statewide teacher development programs, the new Ohio schools initiatives emphasize sustained partnerships at the local level. They increase the training time frame to at least 80 hours in the first year and 40 hours in the second year. Programs now include measurements to determine changes in Ohio schools teachers’ content knowledge, instructional practices, and their effect upon student achievement.

Hockey is a sport that is enjoyed by many players and fans.
