Why straights are better than flushes

I know, you’re reading this headline and scratching your head. A flush beats a straight, you say to yourself. How is a straight better than a flush? Well, what if I also told you that pocket fives are better than pocket aces?

All joking aside, what I mean by this is that hands like straights and pocket fives can reap you more money in the long run because they can make strong hands that are well hidden. It’s not enough to make a strong hand in hold’em; you also need to get paid off on that hand to make it worthwhile.

Players are always very wary when three of a suit lands on the board in hold’em and the presence of the third card often slows down the betting. Potential straight cards, on the other hand, don’t always have the same effect. Consider a flop of 9-J-2, with you holding 10-Q. If an 8 comes on the river, you are likely to get paid off, whereas if you were drawing to a flush maybe you don’t reap as much. Why are players more wary of flushes? That is a hard one to explain. Perhaps it’s easier to keep up with the symbols on the cards than worrying about counting five cards in a row. After all, in school we learn how to match symbols together, but they don’t teach us that “jack” comes after “ten.”

The reason I say that pocket fives are better than pocket aces is the greater potential to win a player’s stack. You will usually only get enough betting action to win a player’s stack with pocket aces if your opponent has pocket kings. If you flop a set of aces against opponents, you likely have the deck locked up and are therefore unlikely to get much action unless one opponent has the case ace in his hand.

With small pocket pairs like 5-5, however, when you flop a set you stand to win a nice pot because your hand is hidden. Players are conditioned to look out for high cards on the flop. If you are up against a player who has raised pre-flop with Q-Q, he is going to be wary of a king or ace hitting the flop. If that flop comes J-6-5, and he bets, you can raise and he may push all in to “protect” his hand. There lies the value of the small pocket pair.

Hoyt Corkins told me his favorite pocket pair is 6-6, and there is a good reason for it. If the board comes with a 2-3-4-5 then anyone with an ace may pay him off, hoping he doesn’t really have a six in his hand to make the higher straight.

Remember that in any poker game it’s not how great a hand you can make, but how great a hand that you can get paid off that matters the most.

Whenever I am sitting watching TV or a movie, I will keep the bottle in my hand with the lid off. I take a lot of little sips until the bottle is gone. A great way of making sure you drink more water is to make sure it is easily accessible.

2. Keep it cold.

I don't know many people who like to drink room temperature water, I sure don't. If you keep your water cold, you will drink more. I make sure there is always ice in my freezer, this make it very easy to have a cold glass of water anytime.

3. Chose water in restaurants.

Whenever I go out to eat, I always drink water with some lemon. The lemon adds a little spunk to the taste and the water is always nice, cold and refreshing. And so, my mind ran from one topic to another as I packed for an upcoming trip. My work sometimes takes me overseas, to different cultures, peoples and places. This time, business was taking me to the land of my ancestors, a land of contradictions, the mysterious subcontinent of India. It would not be my first visit to that country. I’d been there before, as both my children were adopted in India — Malika first, followed by Jonathan a few years later.

I had the opportunity, in my earlier visits, to experience the extremes and subtleties of this paradox known as India. Opulence and wealth existed side by side with poverty and decadence. Medieval villages, where life remained unchanged for centuries, contrasted sharply with modern, urban metropolises. Holymen dressed in long, flowing robes shared the crowded streets with executives in double - breasted suits or brightly colored saris. It was not strange to see a Rolls Royce jostling with a Brahma Bull for right of way through a crowded intersection. From the hustle and bustle of Bombay to the quiet waters of the Jammuna, one traversed not only time and space, but the very nature of reality. Perhaps, like everywhere, yet, nowhere else on Earth, one can find the best and the worst in India.

It would not be an extended trip, just a matter of a week, then back again. In a seemingly unending pattern there were pressing matters at home — matters like upcoming deadlines, urgent household repairs and ongoing financial crises to be dealt with, but they would have to wait until my return. I was hoping to see Gideon and Marla before I left, but it was not to be. Much as I valued their friendship and missed them when they’re away, I sometimes feel that they’re just a figment of my imagination and do not exist at all. But then again, how could I ever doubt the times of my knowing, the times when Gideon and Marla had shed so much light onto what seemed like hopeless, burdensome situations. State governments are not the only ones tightening production guidelines; some companies are as well. Sabina, a drinkware supplier, is one of many printers that have honored Proposition 65 by marking items with low lead content imprints with warning labels. Sabina also offers zinc-based and organic-based inks as an alternative.

Claudette Bretzloff, an employee at Sabina, said the company uses ink that complies with CPSC standards. Sabina offers warning labels for any shipment, but for all states other than California, the warning label is optional.

Why is the midwest crazy for this backyard game

Anyone who has ever traveled to the midwest over the summer has surely noticed an obsession over a simple backyard game. The game goes by the name of cornhole, corntoss, and people in the Chicago area refer to it as bean bags or bags. Whatever the name is, the result is the same and that's that the midwest is a hot bed of cornhole game activity and that doesn't appear to be slowing. Each year, larger and larger tournaments are announced and there are some organizations that claim that cornhole will eventually broadcast on ESPN!

For those unfamiliar with the game, it involves two platforms or boards and 8 sets of bags. The goal is to pair up in teams of two and take turns tossing each of the teams four bags onto the opposing team's board. Some might remember this game or a variation of this game from their youth. The question is, how did the game go from being a sleepy kids game to a staple in every college town in America. Well, for one its a game that everyone can play. No longer do you have to worry about matching up skill levels in order to get a fair game. Another reason is that it's a relaxing game where you can socialize with people in and out of the game while still focusing on your play. And finally, college kids have found that it's one of the few games that allows them to hold a can of beer while thowing!

So, where will it end for this game? Is it just a fad that will soon die off? It doesn't appear that it is anytime soon. The game is a staple at any BBQ or summer party that happens in Chicago, Ohio, or Kentucky. Many manufacturers of cornhole products are reporting that they are seeing increased orders from the coasts and other areas of the country that were never exposed to the game. So, who knows? Create a non selling posture...

People love to buy, they hate being sold. You've heard that before and know it's true, yet many salespeople still go in with the objective to "sell" the prospect. We often start by asking questions but when we see that first opening (need)...bam, we're sellin'! Often, unintentionally, the "feature benefit machine gun" comes out and were blasting the prospect with our "best stuff." They feel pressure and ironically so do we!

One of the great challenges that face all of us in sales is the reputation that has been left by all of the "amateurs" that have come before us. Whether you like to admit it or not, there is a negative stigma still associated with the sales profession. Remember the old game "password", I give you a word and you come up with clues (synonyms), to get the contestant to guess the word. If the word was "salesperson" what would some of your clues be?? I'm not asking you to think of yourself but of all those "other" sales people out there. If you're honest, it's not pretty.

In my last post, on how to answer "what makes you better", I began to reveal the essence of the "non selling posture". Saying anything or doing anything that typical sale people do will have you digging a hole for yourself and on the fast track to creating "sameness". The strategy will give you a label you really don't want. That's why it's so important to take a "non selling posture" and to not be afraid of sounding a little negative. It will go a long way to building trust with your prospect and help you to avoid sounding like a typical "sales person".

Don't be afraid, on new prospect calls, to start out by saying thing like:

I'm not sure we can help you.

Our product/program may not be what you need.

Why were you considering an option like this?

On your next new account call try some of these phrases and see if taking a "non selling" posture will remove some of the natural defensiveness from your prospect. It may seem awkward at first but most new behaviors do. I'm confident that this approach will pay dividends and improve your winning percentages! On second thought, "maybe it won't work for you..."
